Phillis Wheatley is one of the most well known poets in the pre-nineteenth century. Her poems marked a point in history showing that blacks could artistic and intellectual. Wheatley's achievements were used as a catalyst for the fledgling antislavery movement.Upon her fame Phillis gained an audience with many popular people, yet was still subjected to the racism and sexism of her time period.
