Phillis Wheatley was born on May 8, 17153 in West Africa. 

At the age of eight Phillis was kidnapped and brought to Boston as a slave when she arrived, Wheatley was weak in health, but was bought as a servant girl for John Wheatley's wife, Susanna. Mrs. Wheatley proceeded to take Phillis under her wing and teach her to read and write. At the age of thirteen, Phillis published her first poem.
